Lesley Ann & Declan
This was my second time photographing a wedding at Moyvalley Hotel, and it confirmed something very quickly. It remains one of the strongest venues I work in. At the centre of the estate sits Balyna House, a restored period residence that adds a distinct character to the day. The interiors are elegant but not overdone. Large windows bring in consistent natural light, which is essential for clean, natural images. Outside, the grounds open up into a mix of formal gardens, tree-lined paths, and quiet corners. That range allows for variety without needing to travel.
From the first meeting, Lesley Ann and Declan were easy to work with. Relaxed, open, and fully engaged. That dynamic carried straight into the wedding day.
The morning preparations took place in a family setting, and the kitchen quickly became the centre of activity. There was constant movement, conversation, and laughter. Lesley Ann stayed calm throughout, which helped set the tone. Hair and makeup were handled by Powder Room Girls, with Susan and Valerie guiding the process steadily. Their role was not just technical. They helped maintain a relaxed pace and atmosphere. Juno, their dog, made several appearances during the morning. I made time to capture those moments. Including pets adds a layer of personality that often becomes more meaningful over time.
The ceremony featured Lucan Gospel Choir, which brought a completely different energy to the room. There was a personal connection too, as Lesley Ann’s mother is part of the choir. Their performance added depth and movement, both visually and emotionally. At times, it felt almost cinematic.
During the drinks reception, Katie O’Connor performed. There is a backstory worth noting. Declan had previously arranged for Katie to busk on Shop Street in Galway during an anniversary trip. As they approached, she began singing Lesley Ann’s favourite song, “Let’s Get Married.” That moment led directly to his proposal. Bringing her into the wedding created a clear narrative link between events. Entertainment continued with Andy James, who moved through the guests during the reception. This type of interaction keeps energy levels high and creates natural reactions, which are valuable from a documentary perspective.
Florals were designed by Fabulous Flowers, with structured bouquets that complemented the setting. Videography was handled by Dreamscapes Wedding Films. Lesley Ann’s dress came from The Bridal Outlet, with a clean silhouette that worked well across both indoor and outdoor settings.
When we stepped outside for couple portraits, the conditions were ideal. Soft light, minimal wind, and access to multiple backdrops within a short distance. The connection between Lesley Ann and Declan was clear. They were completely at ease with each other. Constant interaction, frequent laughter, and a natural tendency to stay close. It removed any need for heavy direction.
What actually makes couple photos feel natural? It is sustained interaction, not isolated poses.
As the evening continued, the energy built steadily. The structure of the venue supports this progression well. Guests can move easily between spaces without losing cohesion. Looking back, this wedding combined a strong venue, a well-paced schedule, and a couple fully engaged with the day. I met Lesley Ann and Declan again later for their album handover, which brought everything full circle.
It reinforced the same point. This was a day built on connection, and it showed in every image.
